Harry Castlemon wrote multiple stories for juveniles, mostly boys. He knew boys wanted excitement and adventure and he gave it to them. He served in the Union Navy from 1862 to 1865, during the American Civil War, and began to write as a teenager, drawing on his experiences Navy ifor the Gunboat Series. He was, at that time, the most-read author for boys in the post-Civil War era.
