The west was won by transportation - pack trains, wagon trains, horseback, railroads, freighting companies, Pony Express, steamboats, stagecoaches, and handcarts. 1848-1869 was the high point of the freighting movement across the Platte Valley down the Missouri River. This was time for Federal Troops, the Mormons, the Pike's Peak Gold Rush and the Montana miners.
