There were many missionaries sent to "third world countries" from the early 1800s to the mid-1900s (and still are), to try to convert the natives of those countries. In this manner, we have a number of excellent works on the sociology and lifestyles of the more primitive societies before and shortly after the coming of the Caucasian do-gooders. The author is trying to buoy up the spirit of missionaries after World War I.
