This history first appeared in 1872 as an article in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, recording the three-year old event of the Central Pacific's crossing of snowy Donner Pass. This is a wonderful story of building the line across the Sierra Nevada, the deserts, and the salt flats to meet the Union Pacific at Pomontory Point May 10, 1879. Great photos in this.
