The Thayer is the last of the small (291 ft.) fore-and-aft rigged vessels on which the greater part of the American west coast's lumber domestic trade was practiced. She was built in 1895 near Eureka, California. Trott has skillfully interwoven his account of the Thayer's final voyage from Seattle to San Francisco, illustrated with Karl Kortum's photographs, and with highlights of her past history. She is presently berthed in the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
